It is no surprise that many large, left-wing social media accounts recently joined Bluesky-but a new analysis from the Pew Research Center tries to quantify this shift.
This is an update of the PEW newspaper report published in November 2024, which did not contain Bluesky in its numbers. The report focused on a relatively small group of 500 influencers, all of which have more than 100,000 followers on at least one large platform and regularly post about current events.
For this bluesky-centered update, Pew examined the same influencers (in contrast to accounts that only found a large audience on Bluesky) and saw that 43% of them had a report on bluesky in February/March. A little more than half (51%) of these accounts were created after the 2024 presidential election.
There is a large gap between influencers on the right and left side, 69% of the left -wing accounts (which expressly identified as liberal or democrats and expressed the support for Kamala Harris or Joe Biden before the presidential elections) made the leap to bluesky, while only 15% of the conservative did the same.
This movement was not necessarily at the expense of X (formerly Twitter). While X owners Elon Musks Alliance seemed to drive new users to Bluesky with today’s President Donald Trump, 82% of the influencers persecuted by PEW still had an account to X, only slightly of 85% in summer 2025.
In other words, even if left -wing influencers immerse themselves in Bluesky, most of them (87%) X have not given up. Pew also says that most influencers continue to post more regularly than on bluesky.
However, Bluesky activity seems to be lifting – the number of influencers on Bluesky, which actually rose of 54% in the first week of January in the last full period of March.
